Title: A Shunga Emakimono of Yokai, Legendary Creatures, Kami, and the Buddha, Circa 1800-1850. A Rare and Rather Unusual Erotic Scroll Featuring Twelve Pairings of Monsters and Deities
Condition: Good
A Late Edo Period, early to mid 19th century emakimono, being a rather rare and unusual miniature shunga scroll, or erotic work featuring twelve unique pairings of various yokai, legendary creatures, kami, and even the Amida Buddha.
I have seen shunga of yurei, shunga pairings of humans and monster, and quite a few other unique examples, but this is admittedly the first I have ever seen one of non-human pairings of legendary or godly nature, even in miniature form.
From a lesbian pair of long limbed Ashinagatenaga, to fishy Ningyo and bird formed Tengu, all sorted of unexpected and surprising pairings are here. The intelligent, mind reading Satori, and even the godly Raijin of thunder and a red haired Shojo, are all in different erotic pairings and actions. The last painting ends with a representation of the Amida Buddha and what is probably a devotee.
The paintings have been laid down and bound in a scroll for preservation, with a beautiful brocade decorated cover, and there are jikusaki (knobs).
One brocade bound emakimono (picture scroll) on paper, 9.5 x 130 cm full size, 6 x 103 cm main. The knobs are not included as part of the measurement.
This emakimono is in good shape, with minimal wear or rubbing to the brocade. There are some creases, fold marks, and staining throughout, with a few paper splits, without much loss.
