Title: A Collection of Six Highly Decorated Tanzaku Strips of Waka Poetry by the fourth lord of the Numazu Domain, Circa 1836-1844
Author: Lord Mizuno Tadakuni
Condition: Very Good

A Late Edo Period, 19th century selection of six tanzaku strips of waka poetry, dating from the mid 19th century.

The strips of poetry have been penned by Mizuno Tadakuni, fourth lord of the Numazu Domain in Suruga and the 11th head of the Mizuno family of the Numazu Domain.

From a young age, he was quickly ushered throughout the ranks of the family and nobility, due to the sad and early deaths of his older brother and father, becoming head of the family at the age of 18. At the order of the shogunate, he was assisting in various construction projects during the Tenpo Reforms, such as the development of new fields in Mikawa, which led to financial difficulties for the domain.

He died at the young age of 21, on July 10th, 1844.

Each tanzaku strip has been beautifully decorated, each strip being a different bright color, and beautifully accentuated with gold sprays.
