Title: A Collection of Flower and Bird Paintings, Circa 1870-1890 (Meiji Period). Illustrated Manuscript of 74 Pages of Paintings, Sketches, and Drawings of Birds and Flowers, by a Student of the Kyoshin-Kai School of Painting
Author: Ito Suiun; Nagai Suichiku
Condition: Very Good
A Meiji Period, 19th century artbook, being a collection of Flower and Birds illustrations. The manuscript is a collection of 74 pages of various paintings, sketches, and drawings, all in different styles. Some are heavily detailed with vibrant colors, others are less so, being rendered as simplistic ink sketches. Many are full page spreads, while others are smaller, split illustrations. Some of the drawings have been produced on other paper, and then transposed to the current artbook, making for an interesting compilation of work.
Of the artists, Ito Suiun was a painter from Nagoya, born in the late Edo period, who appears to have belonged to and studied at the Kyoshin-Kai School of Painting, which was established with an emphasis on the desire to learn painting with a straightforward heart. This manuscript appears to be a collection of study paintings attributed to him and another artist called Nagai Suichiku, possibly a friend or colleague from the same school.
