39 metal printing blocks, dating from the early 20th century, recently discovered in a large suitcase that was acquired in 2022. There are 37 printing blocks, and 1 printing plate, all utilizing designs from the late 15th century to the 19th century. There is one other printing block that appears to have been produced not as a reproduction, but as a possible original, for the purpose of producing an early 20th century ex libris plate.

The photos are not in the same order as the blocks are listed, but they will automatically correspond to the selected style number.

An early 20th century metal printing block bearing a reproduction of the printing block title page border design printed by Simon de Colines depicting Socrates reading a book, Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, and the arms of the Université de Paris (three fleurs de lys and the hand of God presenting a book.

This particular title page design was used early in his career at the University at Paris, with an example as early as 1526 being found, with the work In Hoc Libro Contenta.

A Parisian printer and one of the first printers of the French Renaissance, de Colines was active in Paris as a printer and worked exclusively for the University of Paris, publishing over 700 separate editions over the course of his career.

An early 20th century metal printing block, being the design for the ex libris of actress and stage beauty Andree Megard. Megard was on the Paris stage from 1896 to 1925, being in a variety of shows which included Shakepearean performances directed by her husband, Firmin Gemier. She was known for her appearance and the designs of what she wore, heavily preferring the creations of Redfern & Sons.

Given the specific nature of this printing block, and that it is the only design from the early 20th century from the original collection, it is interesting to speculate whether this was the original printing block used to produce her ex libris labels.
