Title: Voyages et aventures de Laperouse, 1848
Author: F Valentin
Condition: Very Good
Publisher: Tours, Ad Mame et Cie
A mid 19th century edition of Valentin’s Voyages and Adventures of Jean Francois de Galaup, comte de Laperouse, the French Naval officer and explorer whose expedition famously vanished in Oceania, with their fate only being discovered in the 19th century. Both ships Boussole and Astrolabe were horrendously wrecked on the reefs of Vanikoro, some survivors being massacred by the local inhabitants, and another group of sailors leaving on a hand crafted boat, though it is still unknown as to what became of them.
This edition is bound in a brilliantly decorated and ornate cartonnage binding of the period, with gold gilt set again a light blue, with a wonderful central panel on the front depicting Laperouse’s expedition, shortly before the disastrous outcome.
One finely decorated cartonnage volume in 12mo, 288 pages
On note of condition this volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and staining to the corners and spine. The gilt decoration is still shining brightly, although there is a small scuff on the central panel. There is little to no foxing throughout.
