Title: Two Connecting Bifolio Fragments from a Missal. Germany, Circa 1050-1100. Latin Manuscript on Parchment. Spine Linings Recovered from a Binding
Condition: Good
Two mid to late 11th century bifolio leaf fragments, taken from a Missal, written in Latin, and produced in Germany, in a Carolingian script. There are some neumes present.
These manuscripts were once used as binder’s waste, saved from a bookbinding, and used as spine linings, as is evident with the shape of the fragments. The fragments also appear to connect to each other, matching with the cut off text.
These manuscripts are written in a 14 and 12-line two-column format.
Two manuscript bifolios on parchment, 10.4 x 28.5 cm; 11.5 x 29.6 cm
These manuscripts are in good shape, with some rubbing and old staining to the parchment. Some of the script is faded to the side more exposed to the elements, and there is text loss due to the cuts made by the binder centuries ago.
