Extremely Rare Book of Common Prayer, With Only Three Copies Recorded, All Imperfect. Scattered, but often Dense Annotations
Author: Church of England
Publisher: London, Richard Jugge; London, John Day
Condition: Very Good
An extremely scarce late 16th century edition of The Book of Common Prayer, as printed by Richard Jugge. Additionally bound in and commonly issued with it is his Psalter or Psalmes of David, beginning with the title enhanced with a beautiful woodcut border.
Both texts are beautifully decorated with large and detailed historiated initials, as well as some general woodcut initials. And although scattered, a handful of pages bear profuse annotations and commentaries in an early hand.
As one last addition, there is also a 1580 Book of Psalms bound in, printed by Thomas Sternhold, with another beautiful title within a woodcut border, woodcut initials and musical notation throughout.
All three works are printed in Blackletter.
There are bookplates for the Zion Research Library, and one Rev. John Young. There is also an ownership inscription for one J. D. Butler of Burgh Lodge, Hambledon.
As per ESTC record 2248535397, there are only three copies of this edition of the BoCP recorded in libraries. It should be noted that while there is a fourth copy noted in the Zion Research Library, it is THIS LITERAL COPY, as the Research Library has shut down. For comparison of prior sales records, the annotated copy (also lacking the title and another prelim) at the Bonhams sale of Nov 15, 2017, hammered for a little over 18000 USD, though some of those annotations were of significant historical note, and written by Sir Hugh Cholmondele. The annotations in this copy have not been extensively studied.
The title page is lacking to the BoCP, as are three preliminary leaves (... 8 - table & calendar leaf, Delta 1 - first page of proper lessons, Delta 10 - Nov/Dec calendar page). The main text is complete.
Three works finely bound into one volume in folio, (28 of 36)+262+156, 204+(10) pages
This volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding. A few leaves to the Book of Common Prayer have marginal restorations, and the Psalms Title has had some strengthening to the lower and fore margin. There is some browning and staining scattered throughout, heavier to a handful of leaves, especially the last few, and a couple of worm holes to the very last leaf.
