An early 19th century edition of Smollett’s translation of the Adventures of Gil Blas by Le Sage. A picaresque novel, the novel follows the titular character and his journey from humble stable hand to entering the royal court of the king, with numerous encounters and situations in between, all being resolved by his quick wit and adaptability.
There are 10 full-page illustrations throughout, based after designs by E.W. Thompson (8) and J. Thurston (2).
Three finely bound volumes in octavo, XII+399, VIII+392, XV+420 pages
On note of condition, these volumes are in very good shape, with some rubbing to the boards, with heavier wear to the corners, and some wear to the hinges. Part of the hinge to the cover of volume 3 is cracked. There is minor foxing to volumes 1 and 2, with more toning to volume 3.
