Title: Shaka goichidaiki zue. The Life of Shakyamuni, Or, The Life of Buddha, Volume 2. Second edition, early Meiji period (mid 1800s)
Author: Yamada Isai
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai
A rare and scare volume from The Shaka goichidaiki zue, or Life of Buddha, as illustrated by the legendary Katsushika Hokusai. This is from the second edition from the early Meiji era.
To summarize this volume and its woodblock illustrations, we see a gathering of the Sangha as they see the young Buddha stand atop a lotus flower, as the Heavenly Dragon blows its powerful breath upon the Buddha, giving him life. Other gods in the heavens also look upon the Buddha. In later years, we see the Buddha fignting a wild elephant, and battles against warriors on horse.
One volume in 8vo, 38 leaves, 10 pages of illustrations.
On note of condition, this copy is in fair condition, with several points to note.
There is some creasing on the covers and a black stain on the front, but other than that the pages are in excellent conditions without any worm damage, the print impressions are clean and come through vividly.
This is an earlier print book that allowed for easy removal of pages.
A scarce woodblock print book, and an excellent example of Hokusai's final work.
