Author: Johannes Herolt
Publisher: Nuremberg, Anton Koberger
Condition: Very Good
Price: 7500
A late 15th century Koberger edition of Herolt’s collection of Sermons of the Disciples on the saints with a store of examples and miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This work is broken down into three parts, being Sermones de Sanctis, Promptuarium exemplorum, and Promptuarium de miraculis.
Also known as Discipulus, Herolt was a Dominican preacher, who was lector and prior of the Dominican monastery in Nuremberg. His sermons are filled with accounts of the lives of the Virgin Mary and the saints.
This volume has been heavily and profusely rubricated in red and blue throughout, with three especially large initials bearing extravagant pen and ink work, and initial strokes in red as well.
The volume is bound in contemporary blind tooled calf over strong wooden boards with blank vellum pastedowns (a bit of an unusual sight), with two brass clasps and a later red label on the spine.
The volume bears several notes of provenance, including a handwritten monastic inscription to the pastedown, and an armorial bookplate for one Rev. J. Williams, Bryntirion.
The first blank, and folio 95 are lacking.
ISTC records 66 copies of this edition in libraries, 20 of which are incomplete.
One finely bound volume in folio, 348 of 350 leaves
This volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding. The first 10 leaves are loosened and with marginal fraying, and folio 30 has a small burn hole, with minor letter loss. The last few leaves bear slight worming, touching a few letters, and there is minor soiling and a bit of light dampstaining scattered throughout.
