Title: Sermones de Tempore et de Sanctis, 1488. Neatly Rubricated, With Several 16th Century English Annotations, Early English Ownership
Author: Martinus Polonus
Publisher: Strasbourg, Johann Grüninger
Condition: Very Good
A late 15th century edition of Polonus Sermones de Tempore et de Sanctis, a collection of over 320 model sermons dedicated to Dominicans.
The primary work is grouped into two parts by liturgical key: de Tempore and de Sanctis.
The work is neatly rubricated throughout in red and blue, and a few of the larger initials bear elaborate flourishes.
The work also bears some very early marginalia, with two distinct hands, including several notes in a 16th century English hand. Though the writer has not been identified, it is intriguing to see an incunabular imprint with early English provenance.
Comparison to the digitized Grüninger copy held at the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Düsseldorf does confirm that this is the same 1488 edition.
The first two quires a and b are lacking, as are leaves H5-H6, and quires I, K, and L. 41 missing leaves total.
One finely bound volume in quarto, 223 of 264 leaves
This volume is in very good shape, with minor wear and rubbing to the binding, heaviest to the hinges. The first and last few leaves have undergone some restoration work to the corners. There is some foxing and dampstaining throughout, heavier to the margins.
