An early 20th century illuminated and handwritten produced by Rosemary Ratcliffe, for W. Jenkyn Thomas, the former Headmaster of Hackney Downs School, for services rendered between 1905-1935.
The address comprises of a hand painted and illuminated armorial frontispiece bearing the motto “God Grant Grace”, as well as an illuminated title with a large hand-painted floral initial. The following pages of signatures written by Ratcliffe are accompanied by rubrication, with hues of red, green, and blue.
The address has been bound in a stunning gilt decorated blue morroco by the binder Peter McLeish, and features Thomas’ monogram at the center. Images of the school have been laid down to the front and fear pastedowns as well.
Of Rosemary Ratcliffe, she was teacher of calligraphy at the Central School of Arts during the 20th century, and previously studied alongside noted artist Clara Hatton as well.
One finely bound illuminated address on vellum in quarto, 10 leaves, plus one additional insert, and 4 blanks
On note of condition, this volume is in very good shape, with light rubbing and wear to the binding, mostly to the corners. There is virtually no foxing throughout, save for one or two very small spots in the margins.
