A mid 17th century edition of Ovid’s Metamorphosis, being the 4th edition of the George Sandy translation. From the Creation to such classical tales of heroes such as Perseus, tragic figures like Icarus, epics like the Fall of Troy, and ending with the apotheosis of Gaius Julius Caesar, this edition is vividly illustrated. There is an engraved frontispiece portrait of Ovid, an additional engraved title page by Salomon Savery after Francisco Clein, and 15 engraved plates, one for each of the 15 books.
The abandoned translation of Virgil’s Aeneid near the end is lacking the first four pages, with pages 297-300 lacking. The rest of the volume is textually and visually complete, with the entirety of the Metamorphosis and the index accounted for.

On note of condition, this volume is in very good shape, with very little rubbing to the binding, and a small white stain to the front board lower joint. There is damp staining to the engraved title page, and scattered staining and foxing throughout. There is lightly penciled underlining to some pages, with penciled ‘x’s to some margins for notation as well. Some pages have been misnumbered.
