A mid 16th century first edition of the Italian translation of Ficino’s famous commentary on Plato’s Symposium on Love. Originally translated into Latin but never printed, he further proceeded to produce a second translation in Italian, dedicating it to his friends Antonio Manetti and Bernardo Del Nero. The commentary has since then considered to be one of the most influential philosophical treatises of the Renaissance, triggering an ensuing wave of other treatises and dialogues.
An Italian scholar and priest, Marsilio Ficino was one of the early Italian Renaissance’s most influential humanist philosopher. He was an astrologer, a reviver of Neoplatonist, and the first to translate the complete extant works of Plato into Latin.
One vellum bound volume in 12mo, (38)+253+(45)
On note of condition, this volume is in good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding. There is foxing and staining throughout, with repairs to the upper right margin throughout on several pages.
