A late 19th century biography on King Louis XIII and Cardinal Cardinal Richelieu. Working together, they were remembered for establishing the Academie francaise, and ending the revolt of the French nobility. They systematically destroyed the castles of defiant lords and denounced the use of private violence.
There are four plates, including the frontispiece.
This edition is bound in a decorated and ornate cartonnage binding of the period, with black and red against golden gilt on the front cover.

On note of condition, this volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear at the boards. There is virtually no foxing or staining throughout.
