A mid 18th century edition of the Office of Holy Week in Latin and French. According to the Roman Missal and Breviary, and the new Paris Missal and Breviary. With reflections and meditations, prayers and instructions for confession and communion. For the use of Madame la Dauphine, and her House.
This volume has been beautifully bound in a red morocco fanfare armorial binding, with extravagant usage of tooling and gilt. Of the royal binders active during the 18th century, the one most easily identifiable in this style of tooling is the work of Atelier Antoine Michel Padeloup, who succeeded Luc Antoine Boyet as 'Relieur de Roi,'. If one refers to the Pointillé tool imprints found on cyclopaedia, several tools are identifiable, notably tools 1 and 2. There are beautiful Dutch brocade end sheets.
This volume is bound in an armorial binding with gilt tooling and bearing the arms of Marie-Josephe de Saxe, Dauphine of France, wife to Louis, son of Louis XV. She was the mother of three successive Kings of France, being Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X.
One finely bound volume in octavo, (1)+XLVIII+852 pages
This volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding, namely to the hinges and corners. The end sheets have been somewhat affected by old staining. There is very light, scattered, foxing throughout.
