Title: Libellus Sodalitatis: Hoc Est, Christianarum Institutionum Libri Quinque, 1588
Author: Franciscus Costerus
Publisher: Antverpiae, ex officina Christophori Plantini
Condition: Good

A late 16th century Plantin Press edition of Costerus’ Libellus Sodalitatis, a text on asceticism in five books.

A Flemish Jesuit, theologian and author, Costerus was an important figure of the Counter-Reformation, receiving a degree of Doctor of Philosophy and Theology from the university of cologne, and becoming provincial of the Jesuit province of Belgium, the Rhine, and later establishing two local sodalities in Cologne after being recalled to lead the College of the Three Crowns. This copy is regrettably lacking pages 99-118.

This volume has been bound in blind stamped pigskin over wooden boards, with two functioning clasps. There are tooled central icons of God the Father holding Jesus Christ, and small angelic figures to the four corners of the central panel, for both covers.

One pigskin bound volume in 32mo, (30)+1-98+119-463 pages

On note of condition, this volume is in good shape, with some rubbing and staining to the binding. There is light foxing to several pages and toning throughout. As noted, pages 99-118 are lacking.
