A first edition copy of Deleyre's Genius of Montesquieu.
A decorated man of letters, Deleyre met a number of famous philosophers of the age of Enlightenment, such as Denis Diderot and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He was later appointed librarian to Philip, Duke of Parma. Although he voted for the execution of Louis the XVI, he was a target during the Great Purge following the rise of Maxilmillian Robespierre, as he was also a Girondist, though luckily he was able to successfully flee into hiding.

On note of condition, this volume is in fair shape. The binding holds well, with minor foxing, and minor chipping and wear noted on the front cover corners.
