Author: Claude François Menestrier
Publisher: Lyon, J. Guerrier
An early 18th century edition of one of Menestrier’s many famous books on heraldry, being a later printing of the 1696 revision.
There are 32 plates of coats of arms out of text in black and a number of other emblems present in-text.
The title page and engraving have been elaborately redone by hand, with additional coloring as well.
Of Menestrier himself, he was one of the greatest French heraldists of his era, a member of the Society of Jesus, and attendant of the royal court. A pirated Dutch edition from 1691 also happened to include included five pages of anti-Louis medals, unfortunately harming Menestrier's position at court.
One finely bound volume in 12mo, (6)+298+(28) pages
On note of condition, this volume is in fair shape, with the binding worn down, and heavy cracking at the joints, though the boards hold well. The fore edges are worn and soft, with some foxing present.
