Title: Hudibras, A Poem Written in the Time of the Civil Wars. Adorned with cuts. 3 Volumes, 1757. 1st French and Dual Language Edition
Author: Samuel Butler, translated by John Townley
Condition: Very Good
A finely bound and extremely scarce set of Butler's satirical poem Hudibras, containing the first French translation by John Townley, and limited to only 200 copies.
While this is the first French translation, the English text is on the opposite pages, making for a unique dual language edition.
The illustrations are reproductions of Hogarth's work from the 1726 edition, containing the original 14 engraved plates, 3 of which are fold outs.
Interestingly, there is an inscription left by one of the previous owners detailing their familiarity with the printer of these 200 limited copies.
3 volumes in Octavo, 365+480+365 pages
On note of condition, all three volumes are in excellent condition, with the binding appearing crisp and fresh, although there is some wear noted on the covers.
