An early 18th century edition of Maimbourg’s history of the Western Schism, also called the Papal Schism, Great Occidental Schism and Schism of 1378. This was a split within the Catholic Church lasting from 1378 to 1417 in which the Popes in Rome and Avignon simultaneously claimed to be the true pope, and each excommunicated the other.
Driven by authoritative politics rather than any theological disagreement, the schism was ended by the Council of Constance, although the rival claims to the papal throne damaged the reputation of the office for some time after.
Unsurprisingly, this book was put on the list of banned books by the Pope in Rome for being deemed too controversial, with Maimbourg himself eventually being expelled from the Society of Jesus by the Pope in 1681.

On note of condition, this volume is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding. There is minor foxing and staining to several pages.
