Title: Histoire de Turenne, 1853
Author: Francois Raguenet
Publisher: Paris et Limoges, Martial Ardant Freres
A mid 19th century edition of Raguenet’s History of Marshal Turenne, French military commander, Marshal General of France and the most illustrious member of the La Tour d'Auvergne family in the 17th century. His decorated military career over a five-decade career earned him a reputation as a legendary commander and was later known as the greatest modern commander by Napoleon Bonaparte himself, as well as various contemporary historians. Tragically, he was killed by an Imperial cannonball at the battle of Salzbach in 1675.
This edition is bound in a richly decorated and ornate cartonnage binding of the period, with gilt against white. There is a large lithograph central panel depicting what appears to be Marshal Turenne.
One finely decorated cartonnage volume in 12mo, 215 pages
On note of condition this volume is in good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding, and a burn mark to the rear joint that burrows to the page gutters. There is foxing throughout.
