As entailed, the handscroll contains a suite of 12 large paintings, all attributed to the Late Edo-Meiji Period artist \u003cb\u003eFujii Shorin \u003c\/b\u003e(1824 - 1894), with his signature and artist seals at the end.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"\u003eAll the paintings are beautifully produced, using various ink wash techniques, with images of animals to floral arrangements, and even a large view of Mount Fuji. At a young age he was summoned by the domain as a monk to assist with illustrations and received instruction in painting from domain painters Takada Kyodo and Yoshida Tori. In 1856 he went to Kyoto and became a pupil of Nakajima Raisho of the Maruyama-Shijo school, also studying waka poetry under Okuni Takamasa and Matsumoto Ryoen, and Chinese classics under Miyoshi Ikkaku, After the Meiji Restoration, he became particularly active as an artist, exhibiting \"Wisteria and Small Birds\" at the 3rd Domestic Industrial Exposition, where he won the Third Prize for Excellent Technique.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"\u003eThe \u003ci\u003eemakimono\u003c\/i\u003e has been laid down on a surprisingly heavy paper and bound in a scroll for preservation, with a beautiful brocade decorated cover of gilt diamonds against blue, and there are \u003ci\u003ejikusaki\u003c\/i\u003e (knobs). The handscroll is enclosed in a wooden box with ties.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"\u003eOne brocade bound \u003ci\u003eemakimono\u003c\/i\u003e (picture scroll) on paper, roughly 22.3 x 696 cm.
