A first edition of Sorel's influential work on French literature to be published outside of France. The work comprises of four long essays, constituting a rebuke of classical romances of valor and heroes, in favor of naturalism and historicism. It could be argued that Sorel was an aesthetic ancestor of Stendhal, Balzac, and Zola. The work is broken down into the following four parts: Knowledge of the good books of our language, Stories and novels, Of French poetry, of its different species, and mainly of comedy, How to speak and write well in our language.
This volume has been bound in vellum, with pleasing yapp edges.
The title has been handwritten on the spine.

On note of condition, this volume is in very good shape, with very little rubbing and wear to the binding. There is little to no foxing or staining throughout.
