Title: Cosmographey oder Beschreibung aller Lander, Herrschafften, furnem[b]sten Stetten, Geschichten, Gebreuche[n], Handtierungen, 16th Century
Author: Sebastian Munster
Publisher: Unknown, Possibly Getruckt zu Basel
A substantial fragment of a 16th century German edition of Sebastian Munster’s Cosmographia, the earliest German-language description of the world. This copy starts from page 1023, and goes to the very end of the volume, with missing pages in between.
There are hundreds of woodcuts throughout, with one double paged city view, and a number of single page views and maps of varying size, up to full page. There are numerous woodcuts of historical figures, animals, mythical creatures and grotesque figures such as Blemmye and others, and more. There are 11 views, 16 maps, and 273 woodcuts of varying size.
One volume in folio, 318 pages. Pages 1023, 1027-1078, 1083-1093, 1099-1108, 1117-1122, 1125-1126, 1131-1161, 1165-1173, 1179-1182, 1185-1226, 1251-1282, 1291-1296, 1301-1310, 1315-1340, 1343-1152, 1155-1163, 1169-1170, 1175-1421 are collated and accounted for.
On note of condition, this volume is in poor shape, with the entire text block being detached and being housed in a binding that is a bit too small for it and rubbing and wear to that binding itself. Some gatherings and individual leaves are detached, with further rubbing and wear to the pages, with torn pages, and corners lacking from some leaves. There is foxing and staining throughout.
