Author: Catholic Church; Jean Benoit; Hans Holbein; Pierre Regnault
Publisher: Parisiis, Prostant apud Carolam Guillard, & Gulielmum Desboys

A scarce mid 16th century edition of Benoit’s Biblia Sacra, the “Secunda edition” of this Bible, including commentary from Benoit himself. This edition contains 216 small woodcuts in the text, including 92 by Hans Holbein for the Old Testament, and 124 by Pierre Regnault for the New Testament. The woodcuts by Holbein were first used in 1538 in another Bible printed in Lyon, and the famous work Historiarum veteris instrumenti icones ad vivum expressae, while Regnault’s woodcuts originate from another Paris Bible first printed in 1540. There are some handwritten annotations to the margins.
This copy does not include the four indexes produced by Jean Benoit.
USTC records 24 existing copies of this edition in libraries.
The volume has been more recently rebound, with new endpapers.
One finely bound volume in large quarto, XVI+964+260 pages
This volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding. The title page is fairly stained, with a small lack of paper to the upper right, not obscuring any text or imagery. There is minor scattered foxing and staining throughout, with several old restorations to the margins.
