Title: Aesopi Phrygis et Aliorum Fabulae Quorum Nomina Sequens Pagella Indicabit, 1718. Black Mold Warning
Author: Aesop; Maximus Planudes
Publisher: Florentiae, Typis Regiae Celsitudinis
An extremely scarce early 18th century edition of the Fables of Aesop, illustrated throughout with woodcuts. Preceding the Fables is a biography of Aesop.
Worldcat records 5 existing copies of this edition in libraries.
One vellum bound volume in 18mo, 279+(9) pages
This volume is in poor shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, but more specifically, black mold having affected the binding, and going through to the first seven pages. Though the mold is presently not Visibly Active, measures should be taken to keep the mold from spreading to other books, and to eventually remove as much of the mold as possible. Surprisingly there is only minor foxing and general staining scattered throughout, with the pages toned. Ordinarily I would discard a book with such a severe mold issue, but it feels improper doing that to a scarce early imprint, and an illustrated one at that. With that in mind, the price is reduced to reflect this severe condition issue.
