A scarce and slightly incomplete early 16th century edition of the works of Virgil. Contained within is his poetical epic, the Aeneid, along with his Eclogues, and Georgics.
All preliminaries are lacking, which includes the first large woodcut of the Aeneid to the verso of the last prelim. 7 leaves are lacking from the Aeneid, 3 are lacking from the second section, and 4 are lacking from the final section.
There are 166 beautiful woodcuts of various size, with many half page and three-quarter page examples. These are exemplary copies of the woodcuts from the Strasbourg Gruninger edition of 1502, displaying images of battle, mythological creatures, and more.
USTC records 16 existing copies of this edition in libraries.
One volume in folio, 243 (of 250), 44 (of 47, with two leaves misbound at the end), 118 (of 122) leaves
This volume is in poor shape, with heavy rubbing and wear to the binding, with cracking to the rear hinge. The text block is detached from the binding, into several blocks. As noted above, a number of leaves are lacking. The upper section of 5 text leaves are heavily stained to the point that they are stuck together, as are leaves 1-2 of the third and final section. After Experientia, there is heavy staining to the upper portions of the leaves, with minor text loss up to leaf 17.
