Title: Album of Frontispieces and Title Pages from the 16th to 18th Century. Compiled during the Late 19th or Early 20th Century
An unusual and extremely unique album of frontispieces and title pages excised from works of the early 16th to late 18th century, in 12mo, 16mo, 24mo, and 32mo formats. The album itself appears to have been assembled during the late 19th or early 20th century, by a rather dedicated collector. Next to some of the excised title pages are various figures. Whether this is indicative of the price paid for the book or something else, is entirely unknown.
There are 212 frontispieces or engraved title pages, mounted on 50 leaves, as well as the insides of the covers and flyleaves, with most of the title pages framed in brown ink.
Most of these title pages are illustrated, with engravers noted such as Huret, F. Chauveau, Auroux, Sevin, Houbraken, Delaunay (after Marillier), F. Cars, R. de Hooghe, Isaac, Papillon, Landry, Daudet, Pitau, P. Giffart, Le Pautre, L. Gaultier, and many, many more. There are also examples from the Aldine, Elzevier, and Plantin publishing houses.
One album in oblong quarto, 50 leaves, 212 frontispieces and engraved title pages
This album is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, namely to the spine and hinges. There is some toning to the margins of the pages, and various degrees of foxing and staining to the pasted title pages.
