Title: The Brown Fairy Book, 1904
Author: Andrew Lang; Leonora Blanche Lang
Publisher: London, Longmans, Green, and Co.
Condition: Very Good
A first edition of Andrew Lang’s Brown Fairy Book. This work contains over 30 fairy tales, including examples such as The Bunyip, the Mermaid and the Boy, The Lion and the Cat, and more.
While Andrew Lang did initially edit the series and write the prefaces, it was Lenora Lang and several other translators who managed a large portion of the translating and retelling of the stories, and it was Lenora who later managed editorial control in the 1890s onwards, with four of the volumes from 1908 to 1912 published solely under the name Mrs. Lang, rather than Andrew’s. Though their work is acknowledged in the prefaces, Lenora’s name is absent from the spine, and the main title page of many of these Fairy Books.
This work is illustrated throughout by H.J. Ford, with 8 full-page color plates, 22 full-page plates, and 19 in text illustrations. The volume is present in its original brown decorative cloth, with a gilt image of a young girl surrounded by various fairies to the front cover and additional gilt to the spine.
One decorative cloth volume in octavo, XIII+350 pages
On note of condition, this volume is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing and wear to the binding. The corners of some pages have been shorn by .5cm. The front inner hinges are slightly cracked at the ends. There is very little foxing or staining throughout.
